Painted Hand help, line by line

If the numbers of an evening at Painted Hand stop adding up, Saskatchewan has a short list of lines and programs for it. Each one is set out below with its own figures: phone numbers, hours and terms.

The provincial helpline

The Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Helpline answers at 1-800-306-6789. Calls are free and confidential. Trained counsellors staff the line 24 hours a day, so a call placed at the end of a late night still reaches one of them. The helpline is open to people who gamble and to their families as well, which means a partner, parent or adult child can call about someone else's play.

Free counselling for residents

Problem-gambling counselling in Saskatchewan runs through the Saskatchewan Health Authority. It is free for residents of the province. No doctor's referral is needed, so a resident can ask for it without first booking a medical appointment. Residents of east-central Saskatchewan, Yorkton included, fall under the same rule.

SIGA Voluntary Self-Exclusion

SIGA Voluntary Self-Exclusion can be arranged at any SIGA casino, Painted Hand in Yorkton among them. It can also be done by appointment at SIGA's Central Office, 103 Aspen Place, Saskatoon. The person picks a term from 6 months to 5 years. During that term they are barred from all nine casinos in Saskatchewan, not just the seven SIGA ones.

Nobody can enrol someone else. At SIGA casinos, anyone excluded or self-excluded counts as a prohibited individual who cannot collect winnings. The same rule covers anyone under 19.

Game Break, casinos and PlayNow

Casino Regina and Casino Moose Jaw operate Game Break, a voluntary self-exclusion covering every casino in Saskatchewan as well as PlayNow.com, the province's one legal site for online gambling. A term can be set anywhere from 6 months to 5 years. After a Game Break begins, it cannot be lifted or shortened, which means the length picked at the outset is the length that holds.

Gamblers Anonymous in Saskatchewan keeps a hotline at 1-855-781-9522. It answers 24 hours a day. The number differs from the provincial helpline, 1-800-306-6789, and both fit in a phone's contacts before an evening at Painted Hand.
